Richard Powers Quote

"We’re shaped to think the things we want will make us happy. But shaped to take only the briefest thrill in getting. Wanting is what having wants to recover." -Richard Powers (from his upcoming book Generosity)

  1. The last line is completely non-sensicle, because of its gross grammatical errors.

  2. OK, I think what the last line is trying to say, is that somebody who badly wants a shiny, brand new red Corvette, will wish they hadn't got it after they finally get it, but instead wish they were still hoping to get one. I strongly doubt this claim. Instead, they more likely will wish and hope for, say a mint condition classic Corvette to add to their collection.

  3. I'm not sure if the claim of the quote is the insatiable desire for more, but rather the idealistic thrill of expectation. Think about Christmas eve for children. Is it not more desirable to be in bed anticipating hopefully, waiting for everything that will greet you under the tree, than to be mulling about your "things" two days later with the December 26 blues. Kid's may find themselves with everything they want, but still pining for the next year... for what?... for the wonder, the excitement, the thrill, the mystery that accompanies expectation.

  4. When I was a kid we always opened presents on Xmas eve. I remember trying to sleep that night afterwards, all wound up, and tossing & turning. It was quite torturous!
